Launched into the all-important US market in 1975 but not released in the UK until 1976, the Triumph TR7 marked a radical departure for the famous TR sportscar line. Faced with impending US legislation (which never materialised) threatening to outlaw convertibles, and an increasingly sophisticated US market which since the arrival of the very successful Datsun 240Z/260Z demanded more comfort in a sports car, the previous TR formula exemplified by the hairy-chested TR6 had to be substantially altered. Accordingly Harris Mann designed a futuristic hardtop coupe bodyshell with distinctive cut off rear window and pop up headlamps housing a roomy 2-seater interior. Powered by a 1998cc version of the Dolomite 1850 engine (surprisingly the 16 valve Sprint unit was never fitted) the TR7 may have shocked purists but found favour with the buying public who appreciated its long-legged, torquey performance, supple ride, enjoyable rear-wheel drive handling and comfortable interior. Early build quality problems stemming from being built in a brand new factory were overcome following a short halt in production and relocation to Coventry in 1978. With the imminent disappearance of the MGB from BL's line-up a very attractive Convertible version was designed and launched in 1980. The well-designed soft-top transformed the Coupe's controversial looks and with a snug and comfortable interior and no real competition save for the smaller Fiat X1/9 the Convertible sold steadily until production ceased at the end of 1981, although sufficient stocks remained for the car to be sold well into 1982.

The 1980 registered example offered for sale here is finished in white with a blue check cloth interior and we are told that it has been subject to 'older restoration'. Benefiting from a 'recent hood' this TR7 is described as being 'good' with regard to engine, transmission, paintwork, bodywork, chassis and wheels/tyres, with 'very good' interior and 'working' electrical equipment. Having a valid MOT until June 2008 and showing an unwarranted 111,000 miles on the odometer, this TR7 could be a very cheap way to enjoy the pleasures of open air summer motoring.

PLEASE NOTE: We apologise but this vehicle has been withdrawn from the 20th June 2007 auction.
